Chalet Girl

A week or so ago I won a prize on this blog (Can’t get linky thing working tonight – www.chaletgirl.wordpress.com).  A double pass to see Chalet Girl at the movies.  And tonight I used my prize.

The movie was as expected – a light fluffy feel good chick flick.  The ending was obvious from the start – no unpredictable twists or turns here.

The movie is about Kim, a champion skateboarder, whose mother is killed in a car accident on the way home from a big event.  Kim stops boarding, works in a deadend job and looks after her Dad, who is unemployed, and money is tight.  Looking to earn more money, Kim takes a job as a Chalet Girl in Austria, takes up snowboarding, falls in love with her bosses son & ends up being a superstar snow boarder.

The movie was humerous, with Bill Nighy in it there was always going to be some laughs.  The mountains were spectacular and there was plenty of great skiing & boarding in fresh powder to enjoy.  Overall a fun movie to watch with girlfriends.

My biggest question from this movie is: when did Brooke Shields become old enough to play the mother of a man old enough to be getting engaged & married????  Wasn’t it only a few years ago that she filmed Blue Lagoon????

It was fun night out with my friend.  So thank you Sheridan, and Paramount for providing the tickets.

Hard Work & a party

Round 1 12WBT has finished and I didn’t get around to blogging about it.  The first half went well, I was back to the weight I wanted to be, but then moving house through a spanner in the works.  The round became about building on my fitness & achieving fitness goals.  I have now done a 4km fun run and 2 10km runs – one at 1:02 & the second was 58:35.  Major goal met, 10km in under an hour.  At the moment there are 2 more big runs in the pipeline – one in June & then the City to Surf in Sydney in August.  This will probably be topped off in September with the Canberra Times 10km Fun Run.  And to think this time last year I was struggling to run for 20 minutes – if I can do this, then anyone can.

And the biggest & best bit of round 1 2011 – the party in Melbourne.

These 2 girls have been friends for over 20 years – across continents & cities, through babies, marriages, family tragedies, relationship breakups & divorce and all the other things life throws at you.  And last weekend they also survived the largest ever in Australia outdoor workout together!  As part of the end of the round Michelle Bridges ran a huge workout at the State Hockey & Netball Centre in Melbourne.  In the rain & the mud!  Lucky for me my wonderful friend convinced me that it was OK to get down a pushup in the mud (and pleased I did or Mish would have made us do even more!).  That was followed by more pushups in the mud, burpees in the mud & with a huge rope, planks in the mud & situps in the mud.  It was horrible and fun and exhilerating and somehow liberating.   Mish came around to every group & ran us all through our paces.

And of course, we were also surrounded by the amazing 12wbt Canberra Capital Punishment girls too – it was a blast.  Though I am not so sure that the poor people on the tram we all caught from Parkville to the city thought that – a tram suddenly crowded with muddy, wet, sweaty people on a cold Saturday afternoon, not sure that is how I would like to be planning my journey.

After some time for showers, we even had time to meet up with my fabulous cousin for coffee.  And then headed off the Silk Road on Collins to party.

700 people in an amazing bar with something all in common – a passion for 12wbt & the amazing results it achieved (18,000kgs lost in round 1 2011).  I was thrilled that the niece of one of my dear friends came third in this round & also thrilled to hear Michelle speak about her pride in the program.  There were tears as well!

It was fabulous to spend the night celebrating with the people that made the last 2 rounds of 12wbt so special – there was some drinking, some eating, chatting, dancing and McDonalds at midnight!  An amazing night and the perfect end to my 12wbt journey.  I have decided to end my participation in the program here – I have learnt so much about myself and what I can achieve.  My confidence and self esteem has grown so much and I now know that I can do anything I set my mind to.  I plan on continuing to run and train, particularly with my running buddy Di.  I owe so much to 12wbt & Michelle Bridges.   This program does work!

A belated week 5 wrap up

I have been a bit slack in getting this weeks wrap up written and posted – not sure why, but time seems to be flying.

Week 5 continued in much the same vein as the previous weeks, lost another 1kg on Wednesday, so now up to 4.9kg.  Was a bit disappointed to hear that Mish sent out emails to people who had lost over 5kgs telling them how great they were doing as I missed out, especially when one of my friends received one and her weight loss was exactly the same as mine.

I guess my biggest problem this week is where my head is at.  As the program nears half way I am starting to wish it was over and the occasional treat wouldn’t cause me so much guilt.  Don’t get me wrong – I love this program, love the exercising, love most meals and am loving the weight  coming off.  The effort of continuing to cook for myself, and often having to make a separate meal for the boys, is becoming a chore.  The fact that my freezer is packed with frozen leftovers is also driving me mad.  I have decided to substitute lunches as often as possible to use up what is in the freezer.  I dream of having a sleep in, or a day with nothing to do.

Life is back to the normal busy-ness of term time and the focus has shifted from the program to managing to get through each week – fitting in swimming, futsal, touch, basketball, homework, Sunday School homework, church and work.  The mornings are still mine – up before the boys to do exercise each day.

One of the highlights of my week was Capital Punishment.  It makes exercise so much more fun to be doing it with other people, even if I did spend 3 days recovering from the 100 squats we did.  It is amazing how busy Lake Burley Griffin is first thing on a Saturday.  So many people exercising.  I did discover that I quite enjoy running on flat ground – very difficult to do near my house as there are so many hills.  The very lovely Claire, who is also doing the program, sorted out a tough program to follow and even taught us some Tae Kwon Do kicking – so thank you to her again.

I will eventually do some more sewing once my days aren’t so consumed with cooking & exercising.  And I still need to post about Zumba!

Look what I did!!!

My first ever quilt top!!  And I didn’t really do it all myself.  The wonderfully generous Sheridan helped me – she taught me how to cut, has lent me her old sewing machine & showed my how to sew the squares together.

When I had my first go at the machine she reminded me that I probably hadn’t touched a machine since year 7 sewing – um, not quite.  I didn’t get to use a sewing machine in year 7 sewing as it took me the whole 8 weeks to handstitch around a stuffed toy – so nope, no sewing machine playing for me at school.  This was the first time I had EVER used a sewing machine.  And it was fun.

It is not perfect and it is very small, but I did it.  I think this is also the first time I have even had fabric in my house!  And this afternoon I have cut out more squares to make a second quilt top, with the plan to then sew them together.  At the moment I am planning on making this little quilt bigger and then the next time I meet up with Sheridan she will show me the next steps to turn this into a quilt.

We have had a very busy school holiday period here, and there will be a few other things for show & tell over the next few posts.  But I think our holiday highlight was the visit from Sheridan and me learning how to use a machine!!

A few thank yous

On Tuesday I was able to be the luckiest person in my office.  This amazing display of flowers arrived in my office (and please ignore the horrible mess surrounding the beauty, it is the end of financial year and there are a stack of clients I am trying to keep happy) from my amazing friend, Sheri of Chaletgirl, and her lovely husband and children.  They certainly brightened up a very dark week as deadlines loomed.  The reason for the flowers will be more widely known shortly.  They were so very much appreciated and a wonderful surprise, so thank you dear friend.

And then later in the week, this arrived in the post from Donna at Craft Junk and Creative Controller.  I won a prize on her blog and was thrilled to receive this parcel.  Not sure what to do with the material, but as Sheri is coming to visit in a few weeks, I am sure there will be some assistance provided there.  There were lots more balls of wool than what I have shown here – these were happily played with a my bible study social night on Wednesday.  I took my parcel over to show it off, and it came in very handy when we pulled out our knitting.  I am really looking forward to trying out all the needles, including the DPN’s (see, I am getting the lingo already) though they may need to just wait for a little while, as I come to terms with perling.  And I now also have some crochet hooks to start to learn crocheting.  Think my life is going to be very busy.  Thank you Donna, your gift is very much appreciated.

And I have been doing more knitting, and stitching, and dealing with the politics of p&cs, but will save all of that for another day.
